Description
Casa Zoe San Foca: Salento & Adriatic Riviera – Spacious for 7 with AC and WiFi
Attractions
San Foca is located on the Adriatic coast of Salento, approximately 24 km from Lecce. A hamlet of the municipality of Melendugno, just 7 km away, it is situated between Torre Specchia Ruggeri and Roca Vecchia. From an ancient fishing village, San Foca has transformed into one of the most popular seaside resorts in Salento, particularly beloved by families with children thanks to its sandy beaches, crystal-clear sea, and well-organized services.
The name San Foca has Byzantine origins: in the Salento dialect, it is called Santu Fucà, recalling the Byzantine Greek pronunciation Fokàs. The spread of the name is linked both to the cult of the patron saint and to the figure of General Nicephorus Phocas, who consolidated the Byzantine presence in southern Italy in the 9th century. The village takes its name from Saint Phocas of Sinope, known as the Gardener, a martyr who lived between the 1st and 2nd centuries AD and was the protector of gardeners, sailors, and fishermen.
Although not rich in monuments, San Foca offers all the amenities for a complete vacation: a lively center with restaurants, bars, ice cream parlors, and shops, a watchtower, a marina, the Parish of Maria SS. Assunta, and a pleasant 1.3 km long seafront promenade, ideal for sunset strolls. The wide sandy beaches are undoubtedly the town's main attraction.
From the marina, boat trips along the Adriatic coast can be organized, a captivating experience that allows you to admire the Salento coastline from a unique perspective. During these excursions, you can reach Roca Vecchia and the famous Grotta della Poesia, as well as the Faraglioni di Sant'Andrea, as well as coves, sea caves, and stretches of pristine coastline, immersed in a sea of intense colors.
Thanks to its strategic location, San Foca is also an excellent starting point for visiting some of Salento's most fascinating destinations, such as Torre dell'Orso, the Alimini Lakes, Otranto, and Lecce, all easily accessible by car. The coastal towns can be easily explored by sea on boat excursions.
In the evening, the village comes alive with numerous entertainment options: dinners at seaside restaurants, strolls through the harbor, seafront, and town center, musical evenings at the beach clubs, or relaxing in the most popular bars. During the summer, there is no shortage of events and beach parties.
Among the most heartfelt celebrations is the Feast of San Foca, celebrated on August 18th and 19th in honor of the patron saint. This event combines faith, tradition, and folklore, with stalls along the seafront and a picturesque procession at sea. Another popular event is the Feast of the Madonna del Mare, on July 20th and 21st, with processions, music, and entertainment for all ages.
